<These seem to be two lessons learned from the Pentium MMX introduction, and it gives me more confidence in Intel that they are learning from experience.>

It's called paranoia. First, Intel was paranoid about MMX acceptance in Pentium, so they created the massive Bunny People ad campaign. This, however, turned out to be a little too successful. Now Intel is paranoid about being over-paranoid about KNI acceptance.

There was a phrase that someone coined in a class I took a while ago called the "George Costanza mentality." This phrase could very well describe Intel's current strategy with Katmai.

Harry - Re: " Intel has gone out of their way to drum
up more software to be ready (we hope) at the time of the launch, and b) they are keeping the intro under deep cover to avoid people putting off Xmas purchases. "

I think you are right on both counts.

My concern for next year, however, is Intel's Katmai Ramp. Recall the very fast Pentium MMX conversion in 1997? Intel was stuck with a huge pipeline full of the non-MMX's and stumbled during the conversion in Q1 and Q297.

I sure hope Katmai wafer starts are already beginning.

I wonder if the Katmai will made on the "optically shrunk" 0.18 micron process with 5 layers of metal (a shrink of the first Katmai) ?
