It's simply plain in-efficient to forward hop-by-hop as opposed to taking advantage
of the virtual circuit aggregated next-hop switched mode of the underlying switching
network.

This is an ignorant view. Routers for years have had features that provide "cut-though" functionality. This coupled with new QoS capabilities for real-time traffic, and bigger faster platforms providing mixed switch/router environments will continue to drive the industry. Routers is just a name - CSCO will continue to develop and bring to market industry leading platforms for infrastructure build-out. If you don't think so, short CSCO.
