AT&T Selects Arris Interactive's Cornerstone Cable Telephony System For Competitive Local Communications Services

arris-i.com

Atlanta (October 29, 1998) –Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT/TSE:NTL) announced today that AT&T has signed a
contract with ANTEC (NASDAQ: ANTC) and Arris Interactive (a Nortel Networks/ANTEC joint venture), to
purchase the Cornerstone cable telephony communications system to serve up to 2,000,000 homes. Under the
agreement AT&T can deploy Cornerstone over Tele-Communications, Inc's (TCI) more than 17 million home
service network. The initial order for over $50 million of Cornerstone product begins shipping to AT&T
immediately and represents the first step in an agreement which ANTEC and Arris Interactive (Arris) believe could
result in sales of up to $900,000,000. Arris designs and manufactures the Cornerstone family of highly reliable,
digital, cable communications products. ANTEC is Arris' exclusive sales channel to AT&T for Cornerstone.

"AT&T is the world's leading brand of communications services and Arris is pleased they have selected our
Cornerstone platform to support their thrust into local telephony," said Guy Gill, President and CEO of Arris
Interactive. "Cornerstone delivers premium quality digital communications services today and can economically
migrate to support IP services without stranded investments."

The companies noted that more cable operators have deployed Cornerstone than any other cable telephony product
world-wide. Operators commercially deploying Cornerstone include Cox, TCI, Cablevision Lightpath, Time
Warner, Titus Communications (Japan), VTR Telefonica (Chile), Jupiter Telecommunications (Japan), Priority
Telecom (Austria) and several other operators.

Pat,

Understood. However, I don't think there was any promises around the ALA partnership...although I could be mistaken. I think that they walked down the path together and decided that they could't "live together". As for GTE, well, I could share stories. Let's just say GTE is not an organization that moves at light speed.

CIEN is still in play. Who knows. 'eh?!

And, yes, Ciena is probably not dead, just dormant.

Certainly not after today's action!
