To Twister: Congratulations on your statement. Now, curious what you see as "the changing competitive landscape" which is coming later rather than sooner. What do you see as important changes? As a long term holder, the only changes I foresee are positive - near and long term. Chaz

competitive position = momentum

SUNW has it!

WIN2000 is not a factor and will not become a factor to SUNW.

See you in 18 months!

I now feel that the problems with their model (strategic and financial) will become evident within 9 to 18 months FROM TODAY. Win2000 EE must come out and ia64 must come out before sunw's model is inevitably damaged.

Considering that Win2000 (NT 5.0) is 32-bit and will still clearly not be as stable as Solaris, don't you think that Solaris will be a better choice for Merced? The performance difference should be dramatic between a 32-bit OS and a 64-bit OS, especially considering how much leaner Solaris is. This will encourage companies to use Sparc-based Solaris servers on the high-end, especially since Sparc technology appears to be keeping pace nicely with Intel (600MHz expected next year I believe, ramping towards 1GHz in 2000, plus TI is a Sparc foundry and believes they will be able to do .10 micron much sooner than anyone else). And, Sparc is far more scalable (will support 1000-way multiprocessing, Merced will only support 8-way). For these reasons I think SUNW's franchise is safe for five years at least (about when MSFT should release a 64-bit Windows).

Thoughts?

Very nice post. I had to take a double take on who the poster was from. You actual gained your credibility back from me anyhow.

I posted this article before but I will point out a few things that I think Sun has over the competition.

McFarlane on Sun,Solaris and the Java Industry
internetwk.com
InternetWeek: A number of market research firms project a consolidation of Unix vendors down to three in the next few years. Do you agree?

McFarlane: There is a consolidation going on, gravitating to Solaris and NT,with MVS still being an important data center operating system. It's also gravitating down to two or three API sets: Solaris, Java and Windows NT.

InternetWeek: Yet, growth in Windows NT is indisputable, and there are clear signs that enterprise customers are paying attention.

McFarlane: Microsoft has been at [NT]for 10 years. They're now claiming that 5.0 is their enterprise release, but they have not committed to a delivery date, and it's pushing 40 million lines of code vs. 12 million for Solaris 7. We really think they're struggling to build their own Unix.

If you believe that MS can take over the enterprise area like it does the hobby area then you could be correct. I for one think that the companies that need mission critical systems will not buy into MS FUD.

Twister,

Do you want to hear something amusing? I shorted this stock just a few days ago and it seems to be a point of confusion to many on this thread. Many seem to be perplexed that somebody could rationally take out a short position on SUNW. You apparently were the only short seller they have ever met. In fact, this thread is so bullish that they find it unfathomable that there is second SUNW short seller. So they jump to the erroneous conclusion that you and I are the same person. Many continue to believe it, in spite of the fact that I told them in plain English that I am not you. Message 6533964 It is really quite amusing.

Anyway FWIW, I read your analysis from you last post. I believe you had it right, and you had it right for the right reasons. Your decision to get out late Oct also proved to be a wise decision. I shorted this stock just recently at 68 primarily because I believe it is overbought. I am basically just playing the volatility at this point. My guess is that the real problems for SUNW will begin to manifest themselves in Q1, 1999. The early warning signs are already here, but as usual investors just ignore them.

Have a good one.

Dale

I think you also said you'd reveal your true identity by the end of the year.
