Re: low-cost machine is aimed at the elderly and young first-time buyers

Does this make good business sense? Are the margins worth the costs for tech support? The 1st. time buyers will probably call a lot more than the more experienced users? Will IBM offer tech. support for that price?

Okay, you tell me why the sudden change of heart by IBM. Less than two weeks ago they said the PC market was dead. Now they've changed their minds. As you're formulating your response consider the other posts indicating all the hidden costs these unsuspecting people are going to get hit with.

I worked in the retail environment and I know the mentality used to sell to first time buyers. I also know the methods they use to sell people up. Personally, I never "bought in" on that approach. If you have a good product at a competitive price and good support you don't need to use a "smoke and mirrors" approach to find a new UNSUSPECTING market.

As for cynical, no...experienced yes.
