Pigboy,

Is there anything AMD can do to prevent this?

AMD has several possibilities.

1. If the K7 comes out on time, it will offer a better instruction set and better performance than Katmai.

2. They could add Katmai instructions to the K6/K7 product line.

Either strategy gives Intel an advantage for some period of time however.

Have Katmandu, the classic song from Cat Stevens (on his greatest hits), playing in the background

Katmandu to symbolize K7?

Pigboy, >>>"I guess it's in Intel's best interest to pump up the marketing a little extra to get that
Katmai shooting out of the barrel with flames on it. I know what you meant now by
saying that you really hope they already had Kats out there.

May I make a radical suggestion for an ad campaign 45 second spot for Intel?

Cute, but Katmai is a code name and companies, including Intel, don't usually "go public" with code names. OTOH, was Pentium the code name for, uh, what'd they call it, Pentium?

Pigboy - Re: " Is there anything AMD can do to prevent this?

AMD will have to reverse engineer the Katmai instructions and redesign their K6's - that may set them back a long time.

The name is catchy and the music is great, but Cat Stevens was always way above earthly matters such as business. I doubt he would license his music for such pedestrian purposes.
