Hi Eric

The subject of renting applications has come up before - I've yet to see an effective application of it that would work both in the US and Europe, where I'm based. One of the big issues over here in the lack of bandwidth in comparison to the US. Whatever date you want to set for cheap, high speed internet access to become available in the US to the masses you can add at least a year to that for it to happen in Europe. Something that could work when the time comes is a combination of technologies that Novell already have, ZENWorks and Replication Services. Modifications to these could allow highly targeted, time-sensitive deployments of applications to end users in a secure environment.

Ideally this would be a hosted service, run by one or more of the local telcos. They could provide a one stop shop for e-commerce applications from planning, design, deployment right through to installation of infrastructure and support - something that a small company doesn't want to get involved with as I well know! The technologies are there - it just needs a concerted effort to get all the pieces linked together and to brand it as a packaged service.

Novell probably have concentrated too much on the larger companies and allowed MSFT to take the small end of the scale, where server numbers are more impressive than user counts. They could now take some of the success in the high end that they're now enjoying and start to look back at the smaller shops. Hopefully without going right to extreme of releasing 'Barney' based doll-type products! Luckily the good Doctor seems to be able to focus, let's hope that doesn't change.

Good luck with SUNW - I'll keep an eye on it. At the moment I'm with a small pre-IPO company. Satisfying work but there's a certain pleasure in looking up your own stock price :-) At least my better half had the sense to stay with NOVL and all her lovely options at $6....

Regards

Peter
