SP3D comments...

SP3D is one of the latest vapor chips of the week and I must admit that I'm getting skeptical in my old age. A few years back something called Pyramid3d was looking promising but eventually failed to come to market. Then came Oak's Warp chip. Never saw daylight. Then Bitboy's announced Glaze3d, which actualy sound more like a donut than a graphics chip. Now this SP3D.

To put it bluntly, if these technologies had any promise whatsoever we would see some serious alliances just like we saw with Nvidia on the Riva128 and the TNT. If you remember, Videologic was actually attracting this kind of attention with their PVRSG. Unfortunately for them, they found it a little hard to redesign for DX6 and integrating 2d probably wasn't a walk in the park. Had Videologic succeeded, however, I think it would have been a huge success given the industry support. Until I start hearing serious rumblings in the marketplace, I'll put these announcements in the circular filing where they belong.

Two upcoming products are getting a little notice. They don't promise the world, but they do promise to be serious competitors. I'm talking about the Rage128 and the Permidia3. The .25u TNT doesn't really scare me. Anandtech has already tried an overclocked TNT and the performance improvement is minor. Also, Nvidia appears to be burning bridges with its failed promises. The STB people can't be happy campers.

I would like to hear more comments about the Permidia3 and the Rage128 for marketplace viability. My personal opinion is that the Rage128 won't be here until 1Q99 and even then the performance won't be on par with TNT given the track record of ATI. The DVD is interesting and something I wish 3dfx would have done. Maybe in the next part of the "family"? The Permidia3 appears to be a high-end only solution, but I thought the same about TNT. Is it an expensive implementation? It would be interesting to know.

Chip, Word is you should bring extra socks to COMDEX (but don't change your underwear!) 'cause TDFX is planning on introducing their new hardware. Joe C.

<< November is the month of COMDEX, which is the computer hardware trade show. I got a tempting invite to 3Dfx's November 16th's press conference here's how it reads: Comdex 1995: 3Dfx Interactive invents 3D-consumer entertainment with Voodoo Graphics. Comdex 1997: 3Dfx Interactive introduces Voodoo2, the most powerful 3D accelerator ever. Comdex 1998: Bring an extra pair of socks (we plan to blow away the ones you're wearing). That got my attention! Unfortunately I won't be able to attend Comdex, but Voodoo Review correspondent William Ball (of Bill's Workshop: billsworkshop.com will be there and he will file a report the night of the 16th which I will send out to you as a special report. I'm assuming that the announcement is next-generation hardware, so if you have any questions for 3Dfx about their upcoming products, SEND THEM IN. Bill will be meeting with 3Dfx's hardware guru Tony Tomasi and he will ask him YOUR questions. Until then we'll have to drool over the possibilities . Thanks for the help Bill; the Voodoo nation eagerly await your findings!>>
