I don't even think it's probably accurate to say after client server because I'm not sure client server is actually going away. <<

Melissa,

The technology which is starting to take hold is called N-Tier Architecture. The leading reason for this shift in technology is a technology from Microsoft called COM (Component Object Model) and a derivation of that model called DCOM or Distributed COM, and it's non-MS competition called CORBA.

The essence of the technology is the ability to create binary compatible business objects that can be run locally on a client machine as well as remotely on a server machine. The traditional Client/Server model is a two tiered model. The N-Tier model creates a layer of abstraction between the database and the client application. This layer of abstraction can use a single or series of application servers to allow tremendous scalability.

COM technology, or realistically DCOM technology, is only a few years old, and is just now starting to really impact software development from a business applications standpoint. Component object software development is the wave of the forseeable future.

If PSFT can re-tool with this technology, they can have a major impact in the marketplace, otherwise they will be killed IMHO. On the other hand, I've looked at the PSFT development tools, and they are quite good for what they do.
