Just because you're not aware of the information doesn't mean it comes from an inside source. The time, date, location of Soundview's technology conference is publicly available and what Nettles has to say will have an impact on CIEN that day. An investor with any meaningful position in a stock will want the details to avoid getting blindsinded, this is what differentiates investing from Vegas or Hornyville. sndvwfncl.com About inside information, it's only illegal to profit from it if you have a fiduciary duty to the shareholder. Otherwise many trading professionals would be out of a job. Because of that duty and chinese wall restrictions, it's totally plausible that Goldman traders are unloading CIEN shares inherited from LTCM without knowledge that another deal is being put together possibly by their own bankers.
