Ed,

<<3)3COM now wants to sell OEM'ed FC switches(Gadzoox) or at least partnering with FC companies on the networking side of the equation.(Not as clear)
4)IBM and 3COM both now selling FC switches.I guess I'm not really sure who 3COM is selling theses switches too, unless they plan on going implementing FC out in LAN/WAN.>>

We need to hear the announcements from 3COM before we can get a clearer picture. A lot of folks on this board may feel or already felt it will be a big disappointment that Ancor did not get the mention from the to be announced 3COM news. 3COM is not in business in selling FC adapters hubs and switches and nobody will be buying FC products from 3COM either at this point. They sell modems and WAN/LAN networking products and software systems to manage them. My take at this point is that they want to incorporate their software system to also manage SAN 'alerts'. This is important to IT professionals, especially in the support arena. I want to do everything from my PC, from getting on a router, ATM switch and a FC hub/switch. A single hardware/software support platform is a much preferred way. Why Gadzooz, you may ask? My guess is that they can provide adapters/hubs and switches. If you read the techweb writings carefully, 3COM is advocating for an open system intended to support many different vendors. If it is Gadzoox, I don't think it is an OEM(I could be wrong) 3COM is not selling any hubs or switches anytime soon IMO. They want to say we have the most sophisticated network management software and oh BTW, please take a look at the way we are managing the 'Network of the Future'. FC is included. Oh yes, the illustration here are FC products from Gadzoox.
That's the way I see it. Let see how close I am.

Ed,

I disagree somewhat with KJ about where 3COM is headed. I think that 3COM is simply the first of the big networkers to realize that a Storage Area Network is a NETWORK, and a largely untapped one at that. In order to provide any form of end to end solution, how can you leave out the NETWORK that connects the storage? 3COM is after that piece of the pie too, and I don't think they will be the last of the big networkers to realize this. They are just the first. Time will tell if I'm right, but I don't see the big guns leaving this space exclusively to the Ancor's, Brocade's, Vixel's, G2's, and Gadzoox's of the world. Cisco, Ascend, Nortel (Bay), and 3COM didn't get to be as big as they are by ignoring markets with huge growth potential.
