Feds backed Microsoft, judge rules

Toronto - Corel Corp. has won a suit against a federal department it says stacked the deck in favour of Microsoft Corp. when buying software.

The National Post reports the Canadian International Trade Tribunal ruled this week that the Public Works Department must give Corel another shot at the contract or pay the Ottawa company damages for lost business.

Revenue Canada had adopted Microsoft as the department standard. Non-Microsoft bids had to include a price for file conversion and retraining staff, as well as a $2-million performance bond.
