having run for a judgeship in the state of Texas, I can tell you that nobody else but the lawyers care enough to give any money to help fund the race--except maybe the candidate's immediate family. the supreme court is really about the only court that can raise any significant money; most of the lower court races are funded by the candidate out of his or her own pocket. the civil judges can raise more; the criminal court judges can't raise much of anything; the criminal defense bar simply does not make many contributions.
