For the record: <<The profit figures are based on The Wall Street Journal's monitoring of 667 publicly traded companies. U.S. corporations posted a 24% gain in net income during the second quarter from a year earlier, but nearly all of that was due to a huge one-time gain by cable-television concern MediaOne Group. Excluding MediaOne's windfall following its separation from U S West, net income at U.S. companies fell 3.6% in the second quarter, and net on continuing operations for the companies in the Wall Street Journal survey fell 2%.>>
