Sam

Thank you for the kind words.

I am not ready to dismiss all of the Church and chrisitianity(or other major religions as unnecesary or even evil. I have seen people's faith
in their belief's enable them to do truly remarkable things. I have also seen the opposite.

I remember one circumstance that is indelibly marked in my mind. There was a man who was taking his family to some kind of church retreat for the weekend. He was driving through chicago and on his way up to Wisconsin. Apiece of a truck in front of him dislodged and struck his gas tank, I believe. He lost several children in the resulting explosion, and he and his wife were quite badly burned. when they interviewed him a few days later, he was obviously gireving, but his faith and demeanor were unbelievably intact. He was much stronger and more centered than I could ever be under those circumstances. His attitude was that his children were the lucky ones, as they were with God, and he was left here. He was strong, supportive of his wife, and quite remarkably healthy in his atitude. I really marvelled at him.

I feel that his faith was what kept him going. Now we could argue that any faith that strong in any religion or life affirming philosophy would be just as strong and true of a crutch, and that is probably true. However, the fact remains that this mans beliefs got him through a tremendously horrid life experience that would have crushed many people.
