If one short's a stock and the company goes bankrupt, does it matter whether one covers or not? I mean isn't the person in the black regardless? Or does one have to cover the postion before trading is halted?

Trufflette, stupid question: how can you short a stock under $5?
I thought that wasn't possible. Obviously I know nothing about shorting. Please enlighten me.
