For years the CIA was saying the USSR's economy was growing at twice the rate of USA's. They predicted with absolute conviction that USSR would surpass the US economy by the Mid 70's.

Couldn't have been too bad as Kennedy knew during the Cuban Missile Crisis that the USSR had fouled up their codes and were unable to launch their missiles.
