<Nevertheless the Alpha 21264 is the fastest there is. It is a quantum leap over what Intel boys can design. It commands the highest MHz and highest FPU benchmark.>

No doubt about that, but what's Compaq/Digital's response to Merced and McKinley then, given that the Alpha 21364 isn't going to change much from the 21264? Compaq can only hope that HP/Intel misses its performance targets with McKinley.

<Alpha implements some of the most advanced chip architecture feature that Intel had to copy.>

Gee, you too subscribe to the notion that Intel is just a Digital copycat? You and Ali must have a conspiracy going, no? 8^o

I remember John Crawford, one of the chief architects of Merced, commenting about the Digital lawsuit. He said that the lawsuit came totally out of left field, and he wasn't aware of any attempt to infringe upon Digital's patents. I got the feeling that the lawsuit upset him personally because it suggested that his own baby was nothing more than a ripoff.

Whether you believe Mr. Crawford's sincerity is irrelevant now. Whether you also believe that Intel is a Digital copycat is irrelevant as well, since now AMD gets to be one by hiring top Digital engineers. Remember that AMD used to be an Intel copycat back in the days of 486 reverse-engineering, but hey, that's irrelevant too.

These days, we've got some real diversification going on, and you and I can both agree that the CPU competition is only lukewarm at the moment.
