CB, President Carter sent Amy to public schools. He was not a limousine liberal like the Kennedys . My two cents on education. My experience has been that socioeconomic status is a good predictor of academic success -the reason for this is these parents are more inclined to get involved with their children's education and motivate their kids. In addition, there are more likely to demand the best from their children and train them to be highly competitive. I realize, of course that there are many exceptions like Bill Clinton and countless others. Unfortunately, you cannot legislate good parenting but the role of the parents in education is the most critical factor IMO Mike

>>That would reduce amount available to educate my kids, but I still support it.<<

is that 1. b/c your school system is good and, therefore, there is no reason to leave and 2. if things did go badly you have an alternative?

btw, i do think the public school system is weak and am not supporting its current apathetic state. however, yanking their best students, taking lots of resources and having kids bear the brunt of the cost of such a program should be, imho, a last resort.

there are other alternatives. i think mike has pointed out that those would take parental effort.

you will do what is necessary to best educate your kid. i believe in doing the sdame without reducing the education, albeit currently poor, education of other kids. they are kids, too. just as important to the world as our own if we step out of our little box...
