Skeet, you sly devil, are you trying to set me up? I say, I can afford private school, but I am leaving my kids in public school, but I support changing the system to allow others to use the voucher system, even thought that would leave less money for my kid. You ask if it is for either of these reasons: 1. Is it because my school system is good and, therefore, there is no reason to leave. Answer: yes. 2. Is it because if things did go badly I have the private school alternative? Answer: Yes. It is also for the following reasons: 3. Almost everyone who lives in a community pays property tax, even renters (it is included in rent), and will pay property tax all their adult lives, so, everyone pays for public schools. 4. Everyone benefits from public schools, either by attending, by sending their own children to public school, and by having an educated citizenry. 5. People with school age children have special financial burdens, either only one working adult, or child care, also extra food, clothing, medical expenses, etc. It is expensive to raise kids. 6. People with grade school children are frequently too strapped to be able to afford private school, yet, they are the ones who need it, and they paid their taxes before they had kids, continue to pay taxes while the children are and will continue to pay taxes after the children are grown. 7. Private schools are not just for the snobbish elite. For example, some people send their children to private school for religious reasons. Some people have children who are handicapped, and require special care. Some private schools are alternative type, e.g., Montessori. 8. Vouchers are a way for the children of poor people to go to private school, just like the snobbish elite, if you will. Anyway, like you said, I really am not going to feel much pain either way, so it's easy for me to be generous.<g> CobaltBlue
