<<It seems contradictory though, because you would argue for legalizing drugs>>

That's rather arrogant of you, isn't it? How do you know what my views are considering legalizing drugs. (In fact I would legalize some, perhaps limited to marijuana (which I certainly do NOT personally use), but would not legalize others, such as heroin...though it would probably save me money in lots of law enforcement ways if event the hard drugs were legalized. Lots more kids would get hooked for life.)

<<At this juncture you can perform nearly any act in public without fear of being ridiculed, regardless of the discomfort caused to others>>

That's certainly a gross exaggeration, but I know what you're getting at, so I'll address it.

What you are bemoaning is the discomfort that some feel as a result of what has been widely labeled the "multicultural" diversity of social expression in American life these days. What I bemoan is attempts by religious or other groups to try to enforce conformity to their particular religious or social views on everyone else. As through a school prayer promulgated by the government establishment on all students, or at any rate, in a sanctioned government setting with government endorsement and authority.

Yes indeed. The conflict over those two different types of discomfort, and which should trump, is indeed what the culture wars are all about. Count me unambiguously among those on the side of multicultural tolerance.

Even thought I am a middle aged white male, who went to a leading private collage, is a professional, and comes from a Christian (though certainly not a fundamentalist) background.
