hi john,

on the face of it, today's lu/orctf announcement could certainly be interpretted as short term expedience on lu's part... til they get their own etsi stuff together.. or impliment other plans..

on the other hand, would think at a minimum lu choosing orctf is a vote of confidence as to the quality of current orctf adsl product.. after all would think more than a few others would gladly work with lu in chasing these markets.

europe i understand, but the middle east and africa seem a bit curious .. had really thought we'd hear something about s. america (same players, maybe including hdsl).. but i guess it might be one step at a time... or just not meant to be..

in any case, have been pulling together my notes on orctf/lu and thought maybe you might be interested.. know you go way back with orctf, and no doubt know all this stuff... but in any case it's an interesting review... am not sure how far lu will go for orctf, but the relationship does go back a ways... would be interesting to know where it started... first thoughts are that today's release is a prelude to more news.. when? where? who knows...

fwiw in the speculation department... the relationship could go back at least to the orctf ipo in 96 when "A well-known US telecommunications company" offered to make a strategic investment at a company value of some $150 million...

and essentially what's known: in january of 97 orctf was supplying hdsl to telephonica spain in partnership with lu... in may 97 it was announced that the two were supplying hdsl to ptt netherlands (and today's press release pushes that date back into 96)... in december 97 it was announced that lu and orctf together won a 1000 line tender for adsl trials with ptt netherlands.. in march 98 lu was demonstrating orctf adsl @ cebit... in june 98 it was reported (in the globe's- article since pulled) that lu had bid on dt adsl tender with orctf...

top of my watch list for further lu/orctf stuff is ptt netherlands... believe a tender is out now for adsl deployment...

other items to watch which don't necessarily lead to lu (but could)... orctf recently won a $20 million hdsl tender @ dt with an unidentified "partner" ... and then there is s. america... and maybe s. africa

best wishes
s
