Globe says strike in South Pacific boosts Canadian nickel shares

Thursday Nov 5 1998

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998 edition that both Inco and Falconbridge stock advanced yesterday, $2 to $18.20 and $1.50 to $18.15, respectively, on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Globe's Market Movers column says investors in Canada can thank striking miners in the South Pacific for the rise in the share prices of nickel mining concerns. When miners on the island of New Caledonia stopped work, nickel prices rose for three days in a row on fears that shipments could be disrupted. Apparently, the workers, who are looking for some government aid, downed tools to protest nickel prices that have recently slumped to their lowest levels in 11 years. The job action appears to have produced some result: Nickel is up 6 per cent this week. Mining analysts also say investors are beginning to buy some of the deep cyclical stocks in anticipation that world economies will improve.

Nah! It's Bear Rally in Nickel because an Inco competitor has a major mine
strike somewhere overseas. N.V ain't going anywhere for now.
