That would be working as a cartell and in strict opposition of existing anti-trust laws. As I've stated earlier - we all want lower costs and any manufacturer will always try to lower costs of components. Rambus' solution is really a software solution as they do not manufacture anything and this "software" (read intelectual property) is needed to reach the speeds that corresponds with the new generation CPU's. Sort of like saying you don't want to pay for Windows/DOS or at least pay a lot less - not going to happen unless a superior solution comes around that also has massive support. The key here is that Rambus has the best "software" out there, it's patented and the Infrastructure is in place - even a better solution (light technology for example) will have problems competing as long as Rambus has the infrastructure and backing of the industry.

VHS vs. BETA: Beta is the better technology, VHS has the infrastructure and support and off course they win the battle. Right now Rambus does not have competitors and they have the infrastructure infrastructure infrastructure (sort of like saying location location location in the real estate biz).

sorry for rambling on like this.....
