Does anyone think Orckit will get a piece of this new Lucent win in Ireland? BT is part of the Ocean venture and they are using Westell DSLAM over ATM for a trial. If Orckit did get a piece it would probably be 6-9mos before they saw any revenue.

----From BT Press Release---
British Telecom,Plc also announced that it has selected the team of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited and Westell to provide ATM system solutions and ADSL networks for the 2,000 line BT Interactive Services Network trial,

"This is a significant collaboration for Lucent," Eric van Amerongen, president and CEO of Lucent's Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

The Ocean network, of which the first phase is slated for completion in early 1999, is based on an Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) infrastructure, using
Lucent's PacketStar(TM); Lucent's Multiservice ATM Switch 1000 (MX1000(TM)); and SDH transport technology.

The network will use high-speed links to carry data and voice.

Ocean said in June the 50-50 venture would focus initially
on building BT's Irish corporate client base and later provide
services to homes
as the Irish market opens to full competition
in December.

[wstl/ dr tech]

hi eric,

nice run for wstl recently .. what do you think... buyout rumors/reality? have noticed recent thread speculation that fujitsu might be involved... might fit... many interesting angles (and not all bad for orctf)..

would think wstl particularly interesting to foreign co's looking to expand marketshare in the usa ... and therefore would also add eci to the list of co's potentially interested: they are pushing hard on dsl and no doubt would like to become make usa inroads... back a ways remember dr. tech mentioning that the wstl ceo was in israel.. at the time speculation was orctf, but it more likely (in hindsight), could have been a visit to ecilf..

have been reluctant to play this one as one of my worries has been that wstl might simply sell off the adsl side of their business which would certainly take care of their cash crunch.. but ... where would that leave their shareholders?

and yes i have noticed dr. tech's posts... and he sure doesn't like orctf.. ;)

seems like one of his recent points (line fees from the post you pointed to) was meant to imply that orctf adsl rev's will be weak... am not so sure about that one, in fact the opposite seems to be the problem.. last quarter's adsl rev's ran $7.4 million.. the challenge for orctf (and all the players) is getting costs down so money can be made! this is gonna take volume, good engineering, and silicon... who's gonna get there first or last long enuf to cash in, seems to be the open question

another of the doctor's orctf themes seems to be that orctf technical solutions are not up to the task.. here too, i am a little dubious as the recent dt win and lu alliance would seem to indicate otherwise..

have you noticed the ongoing commentary on dr. tech over on yahoo? when the dr. started dumping on gary seamens (sp?), a few others with inside lines on wstl got po'd.. most notably friendofthefly who pointed out that the doctor was probably a relatively new employee in marketing @ wstl...

the doctors info seems to be a curious mix of positive spin and internal company propoganda with equal parts of good clean stuff and wishful thinking thrown in... all is dished up together ...

as a point of reference, saved one of dr tech's posts from earlier this year (april 3)... about how the gte/orctf/fujitsu deployment was a hollow temporary solution that would only add up to 1000 lines or so by the end of 98 and how the real gte $$ were going to be spent by the clec in 98 deploying wstl...

suppose it's possible there could be some issues with the gte deployment which have not made their way into print, but by now anyway it seems pretty clear the gte/orctf/fujitsu deployment is for real..

fwiw, to my mind, the best wstl info seems to have come from P1edPiper who took a lot of grief for delivering news straight up..

see ya,
