Walter, I don't know - I'll have to bow to someone else whose knowledge in this field is greater than mine - and mine is virtually zilch.

I do know that Jaws has a biometric initiative, though it's on the backburner (too many other things to deal with right now). My understanding is that it would be a complementary product, not a replacement product.

I have no doubt that one day we'll be able to say "Encrypt, please" or some such phrase and it'll be done. However, IMO, I don't think encryption algorithms will be going the way of the dodo bird any time soon.

Walter,
Regarding your question: Even though the client PC (the computer with a modem and fingerprint-verification device) would be safe, hackers who tap into information via routers would have no problem decoding the data unless strong encryption exists.

Picture the age-old children's toy of two tin cans with a string attached. No matter how much security you put on each can so that only person "X" can access and use that can, as long as hackers have access to the string, they're going to "see" your data (or hear your conversation). The principle of encryption is basically, "Hey, hackers-of-the-world, go ahead and look at my data--you're never going to be able to figure out what it means anyway!"

Hope that helps.

Chris
