Looks like there is a new rumor now:

thestreet.com
...Omnipoint (OMPT:Nasdaq) climbed 0.5% on a separate rumor MCI WorldCom (WCOM:Nasdaq) sought to acquire the firm, Payne said.

Payne, whose firm provides a service detailing such rumors to its clients, could not confirm the veracity of any of the items...
Laura Knight, director of investor relations at Omnipoint, said the company has been having discussions with various parties about taking an equity stake in the company -- and has disclosed that to shareholders -- but had no specific knowledge of any pending deal with MCI WorldCom. An MCI WorldCom spokesman declined to comment.

Maybe but since NextWave died, WCOM has no wireless strategy and if they want to continue to be in the voice business, it seems to me that they will need to make a move in the near future. There doesn't seem to be any other player out there that would propel them into national prominence other than Nextel. Perhaps LWIN would be a good acquisition - certainly is cheap (<$200M) and is building or anticipates building a combination of fixed and mobile wireless solutions in Mexico, Chile, Australia, Russia and the United States.
