pick up the phone, call your broker say "I want to short XXXX" he or she will ask you at what price. then hang up, they will confirm when you have short sold. Easy as pie. Only you can't do otc in most cases, and if you short and a dividend is announced, guess who gets to pay, or worse, a forward split. I had a friend short YHOO in July, he went on vacation. He was plenty upset.
