Hi Chaz, Last week in San Jose, there was an Embedded Computer Device annual show where everybody and their brother who makes stuff to stick in things which you normally wouldn't associate with technology, viz. toasters, was strutting their stuff. The current market leader is Wind River Systems but naturally MSFT smells a major play and is rushing into this 'space' as we tekkies like to say. My guess is that this is a very, very big deal as these damn machines just have to get simpler and more reliable to penetrate the mainstream even more than they currently do. I recently stuck WinFax Pro Version 9.0 on my bad-ass new super duper Micron Millenium with a Graphite Shaft and I gotta tell you it was a major pain in the pooper. First, this latest release from the WinFax folks has got more bugs than Carter has pills and second, it's got a whole lot of features to communicate with aboriginal tribes in Australia but neglected to include a device driver for my modem, which, since it's a mainstream US Robotics up to the second v.90, 56kbs, oversized, cavity backed and all the rest, seems like little enough to ask. So if MSFT and the Mighty Q can make the phones simpler for the user by sticking hugely more intelligence under the hood, I gotta believe it's very significant. You know the MSFT boys didn't do this out of love for the Q and the history of getting into bed with them is a sordid one to say the least, but I remain hopeful that this will be a very valuable collaboration.
