jbe, conservatives are the innovators in politics. Let's just look at the recent track record and compare. Conservatives were the first to pass a law which made it mandatory that Congress abide by the same laws they pass on to the people. Novel concept huh! I guess Tip O'neill and Dan Rowstenkowski just never got around to that one. Here's a few more innovative idea's conservatives have tried or been successful at passing. 1. Term limits. 2. Line Item veto. 3. Welfare reform. 4. Balanced budget amendment. 5. School choice. 6. Capital Gains reduction in taxes. 7. Tort reform Liberals have fought these reforms tooth and nail. Liberal, in the sense of willingness to change is an oxymoron in the American politics of the late 20th century. You're stuck in the 20's if you truly believe otherwise. Conservatives believe in less government, less taxes and more individual freedom. Liberals basically the opposite. When was the last time you heard a liberal say we needed to reduce the cost of government?? Oh, sure you may here them say it in the primaries during a Presidential election, e.g. William Clinton. But that is all it is, a campaign pledge. To a liberal it's the governments money and we are lucky they don't take it all. That is almost an exact quote from Carol Mosley Braun. I'd call that kind of statement marxist. But she had her following in the liberal halls of the Senate, and the Democratic party funded her campaign to the tune of millions. I would also take issue with your insistance that because I say I'm a Republican Conservative I always vote that way. I vote the people I believe follow my basic principles. Less government, less taxes and more individual freedom. It just so happens the people running in my districts which come closest to this are usually Republicans. Truly caring about people who are downtrodden requires you to look beyond the government hand out solutions of the left. This quote, I believe, sums up the belief's of conservatives best. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". Liberals would rather give out a lot of fish and destroy the spirit of people. Conservatives would rather look beyond today, and empower people to access the American free market system for their entire lifetime. Then they can feed others to do the same. The best example of this is the inner city K-1 thru K-12 school system. How the liberals can fight (via the NEA) tooth and nail needed reform is beyond reason or logic. Year after year, children suffer from a pathetic education system which needs systemic changes. Conservatives will not give up this fight easily. The NEA can spend millions upon millions of dollars to ensure our children are stuck in cycles of illiteracy if they want. But EVENTUALLY the socialistic walls will fall. I look forward to that day. The children have suffered long enough. Being caught in a cycle of ignorance is the worst form of tyranny. Michael
