Concerted effort in the last three years to file for patents. A long-neglected area from EDS' perspective. John Harris was a big booster of this type of thing. All it takes is a couple of grand to file, and a bunch of time from legal and the 'inventor' to get a patent filed. Lots of software tools have been developed by the EDS infrastructure, and for particular product offerings. Good to get these visible and protected via patent work. EDS licensed some object-broker software for $5mm a few months back; likely a result of patent filings. I think it will small dollars over time, but big for employee incentive and thought leadership.
