jbe - my personal definition of promiscuous sex is that which is non-monogamous. The form factor of legally and religiously recognized "marriage" is the socio-political validation of the naturally monogamous human male & female relationship.

Other societies have adopted other mores to include, among other things, multiple wives and even concubines. In those situations, however, the application of those ideas came about almost exclusively from a dominant power structure (typically a monarchy), which precluded the "average" man from obtaining that kind of status.

In more egalitarian societies in the West, particularly where the status of females is above that of a chattel, natural monogamy has thrived. It is only here in the final quarter of this century that the ethic of committed long-term marriage and family have been held up to be unnecessary baggage of some kind.

Living together without religious or state sanction has become commonplace and today it is politically incorrect to call it promiscuity, despite the historical definition. To do so invites accusation of promoting "family values" and relegates one's opinion to the rust-heap of the "religious right."
