Kurt,

What says you need bulky laptops? Ever notice how many people are used to Palm Pilots? Imagine using the display on your wireless phone for Palm Pilot functionality -- but getting it through you corporate MS Exchange server? Wirelessly!

The point I was making is that you probably don't use Dragon Dictate to control your PC because it's easier and faster to use a GUI. As GUIs get better on handheld devices, and those devices become connected all the time over the air, there is a good chance that you will choose the GUI.

As for content services, I personally prefer to use a display that can be driven fast over a TUI or VUI. If I'm close to a computer I can get stock info in a couple of familiar key presses - easier than getting Ms. Portico to do it for me.

I won't argue that VUI doesn't have a place -- just that its place may not be as big or as close as you think it is.

Finally on the NOC. VUI is a technology issue that can only be solved there today. Soon (i believe) there will be ASR capabilities in mobile handsets. Then volume will drive down cost and attract innovators, plus wireless bandwith can be drastically reduced since you don't have to flow all the voice over the net.
