Snap-on Maximizes Information Value With EMC Enterprise Storage Network EMC Fibre Channel Storage and Software Facilitate Global Tool Supplier's Move to New Technology Infrastructure HOPKINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1998-- EMC Corporation announced today that Snap-on Incorporated, a leading provider of tool and equipment solutions, will implement an EMC Enterprise Storage Network that will make mission-critical information more readily available throughout the enterprise. EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software, combined with Fibre Channel connectivity, provides a strong, flexible infrastructure that will enable Snap-on to rapidly adapt to ongoing business expansion and changing customer requirements. ''Any way we can improve how we manage information and deliver it more quickly to the people interacting with customers and suppliers is of strategic value to our business,'' commented Christine Dase, Snap-on's Manager of Information Technology. ''EMC's Enterprise Storage Network maximizes that value by blending the flexibility of distributed computing with the superior information management and high availability of EMC consolidated storage. With EMC's Fibre Channel connectivity, Snap-on can increase the distance between Hewlett-Packard servers and the EMC storage systems, and extend the value of EMC's centralized storage to more remote locations throughout the enterprise. Snap-on, based in Kenosha, Wis., also plans to use EMC Fibre Channel network hub connectivity to enable its servers to access storage from multiple EMC Symmetrix systems. ''Our 20 different open systems servers being able to share storage independent of the platform or storage system makes it much easier and more cost effective to manage,'' noted Dase. ''The enhanced speed provided by EMC fibre technology also lets us transact business much more quickly since the processing bottlenecks at high-traffic points in the network will go away. EMC Enterprise Storage Eases Conversion to New IT Infrastructure ''With EMC's advanced software, storage, and Fibre Channel support, we can better manage our transition from a distributed environment to a centralized, open one based on EMC Symmetrix, Baan business software and Oracle databases,'' said Dennis Leitner, Snap-on's Senior Director of Information Technology. ''At the same time, EMC is enabling us to dramatically improve the way we leverage and protect our information. ''For example, growth of some applications were being throttled by scalability issues because our servers were constantly running out of disk space. Now that we are moving all our storage to a centralized EMC storage resource, it's easy to re-allocate capacity to those application areas that need it the most. With an EMC Enterprise Storage strategy, we can better utilize the storage resources we have and defer future storage purchases until we truly need them.'' To facilitate its move to open systems, Snap-on recently used EMC's Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS) software to migrate all of its mainframe data from IBM storage devices to an EMC Symmetrix system in five hours and without any interruption to business operations. The mainframe data is stored alongside open systems data on the EMC Symmetrix system equipped with EMC's Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) software. ''Now that we have our mainframe and open systems data stored in one spot, we are able to preserve our investments in mainframe storage as we gradually shift mainframe storage over to the open systems applications. In the meantime, we get a cost of ownership bonus since our maintenance is much less with the EMC systems compared to our former mainframe storage devices.'' Robert Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President of Markets and Channels, said, ''Snap-on exemplifies the urgent need for companies to exploit the full potential of their information resources by creating powerful, flexible enterprise storage networks. EMC's advanced software and high-performance, high-availability Symmetrix systems provides the industry's best solution for managing and protecting information across today's increasingly complex and diverse technology environments.''
