The NGDLCs that will support ADSL or RADSL are currently limited.

There are a few that will do it today, and several more that are in development. That is the problem. If your serving telco does not consider one of these next generation DLCs to be on their "approved vendor list" you'll be out of luck. And depending if you are presently served by an existing DLC, they are not backward compatible. Anyone in this unfortunate situation would have to wait for the current serving DLC to be fully depreciated or declared obsolete.

One current DLC that will remote ADSL is by NEC America and it supports the Diamond Lane Communications Hitchhiker system (since the last time I looked. Diamond Lane may work with others by now). Another problem here. This is a proprietary system using ATM interfaces. So if your telco isn't ATM compatible at the local office level, they have to install it. They would have to support, or have approved, both NEC DLC and the Diamond Lane system. The chances of all 3 things being in place at your telco? I thought so.

Other DLC compatibles with ADSL are in various stages of development. In most cases, the next vintage of DLC would support the associated ADSL. Keep in mind that these are not mix and match. They must be kept together as compatible systems or no go.

In addition to the NEC - Diamond Lane combination:

1. DSC Communications Lightspan DLC will work with Westell FlexCap2 and Aware ADSL-Link.

2. Lucent SLC-2000 DLC will work with Westell FlexCap2 and Paradyne Hotwire.

3. Northern Telecom (NORTEL) DLC will work with NetSpeed SpeedRunner.

4. Advanced Fibre (AFCI) DLC will work with 3Com Affinity

Keep in mind the myriad conditions that must be in place for these combinations to work. The ATM or IP infrastructure to support DLC - ADSL combination selected must be in place or planned for this to work. Even if there is ADSL out of the serving Central Office, if the approved DLC - ADSL combination is ATM based and no ATM is at the local office, it's a dead end until upgraded. All parts of the infrastructure must be in place and compatible to make it work.

There may be other combinations of DLC - ADSL out there in development that I haven't shown above, but these are the ones well known to me. Sorry if I've missed any. Doing the best I can on short notice.

PS -- I stick pretty close to SI threads and haven't been to the DIMD Yahoo thread. There are lots of knowledgeable people here in Colorado so I'm not surprised you ran into one on Yahoo. Not me though.
