PC Computing Names Winner of First Annual 'Handheld PC Torture Test'
PRNewswire - 11:14 a.m. Nov 12, 1998 Eastern

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA) shipments to the U.S. grew 110 percent last
year*, making this one of the hottest technology product
categories around. Business professionals love them because
they help road warriors stay in touch on the road -- and also
lighten their briefcases. But can these tiny wonders -- which
contain every business person's most crucial work data, like
phone numbers and contacts -- survive a fall from a desk, or out
of an airplane's overhead luggage compartment? To find out,
PC Computing, the 1,000,000-circulation Ziff-Davis (NYSE:
ZD) magazine for technology-focused business professionals,
conducted the first annual "Handheld PC Torture Test." Test
results, including torture survivors and editors' picks, are
reported in December's PC Computing, on newsstands next
week.

Modeled after PC Computing's famous "Notebook Torture
Test," the "Handheld PC Torture Test" re-created the kinds of
indignities that millions of business professionals inflict on their
PDAs day in and day out. Editors took thirteen of the latest
pocket size PCs and simulated the rigors of business travel by
baking them, freezing them, dropping them -- and for the coup
de grace -- spilling coffee on them. Taking home top honors in
the inaugural "Handheld PC Torture Test:" 3Com's Palm III,
lauded by PC Computing editors for its winning combination of
durability, performance, price and features.
