Thanks TLC I have a large mortgage, wife and small son so I don't short stocks even though I have a margin acct. Why didn't Your friend have protective stop on His short. I am trying to learn how to start trying some options with money I can afford to lose. Shorting or buying on margin can backfire on You big time. A friend of mine shorted CDNW at 9 and then 11 earlier this week and covered for a huge loss late that day. Good luck to You and Your friend.

These CRAZY US stocks....I will stick to buying over sold quality Canadian stocks...that have NO fundamental changes in the company(s).

TLC, your post is a good reminder that even the pros get hit. I'm not very comfortable with shorts since the downside risk is much greater than with a long position. Your friend's story is a unfortunate example of that fact in practice. Thanks for the reminder. JR

TLC/Thread: TYVM - Xllnt warning. While I am not worthy of adding anything to what you wrote, please also remind the thread of what can happen if they are short and their brokerage runs-out of long share for them to borrow. In your AVCO scenario, what was that you wrote about being forced to cover @ 50 ... < (Me? I was afraid to jump on it at 14 when Joe Kernan mentioned it.) > We're listening ....., louder please.... bawk, bawk bawk ... that'a boy. :)
