A prima donna is the 'first ballerina', who usually gets the lead roles. It is used in technical circles to refer to a talented contributor who believes his talent entitles him or her to call all the shots, and uses temper tantrums and elitist arguments to get his/her way. It is not necessarily pejorative (since it does imply the holder has a high level of technical skill) but has the implication that the prima donna may be somewhat out of touch with the business mainstream, kind of like 'ivory tower developer'.
