Katherine, Re:"Furthermore, as someone else recently pointed out, even INTC is busy reducing
headcount. That is not the action of a company about to go on a capital spending
spree."

Intel has said this week that they have a few more headcount reductions to do during the remainder of this year, which is the last of a 3,000 headcount reduction announced earlier this year. That was said to be mostly by attrition. At the same time, Intel is placing ads in the San Jose Mercury News and other papers, I am sure, looking for technical talent in several disciplines. We even heard on SI Intel that they are hiring in Israel. It's not unusual for a company to be hiring in some areas while reducing in others. As was posted in here (brought over from the Intel thread) we have it on unofficial, but very good source, that Intel is sold out of the most popular of their segmentized product lines, and even on allocation for Xeons, well into next year.

Over the years, I have gotten used to Intel's typically very conservative business outlook stance. When they come out at all bullish, like now, you can just about take it to the bank that they are on fire.

Tony

Katherine!!!,

You should be ashamed. <vbg>

INTC's total capital spending, even in good years, is barely enough to support AMAT,

And that amounts to the total sales of ... how many would you say... about the bottom 1950 of the 2000+ SEMI members...

INTC is busy reducing headcount.

Do you know a large company that isn't. As Gene has pointed out, they've just had 2 consecutive record quarters. Let me repeat, in case you missed that the first 5 times. Intel corporation has just set a consecutive quarter of record sales the last 2 quarters in a row. Geez, If we have to tell you again, I'll suspect that you may be another infamous female bear who hasn't been posting much on this thread lately. <g>

There are indications that Japan is getting its act together. The PC industry has solved its channel stuffing problem. The sales are real.

I would dearly love it if the bears are correct. I don't own as much of the leaders as I would like to. Nothing would make me happier than to see them back down at this cycle's lows. but I don't realistically expect that to happen. ...and I don't intend to chase them at current or higher prices. Such is the fate of my attempt at market timing. :-(

Have a good week end,
Ian.

Please, I agree that the industry is struggling! You have taken my comments out of context when I was responding to F comments about slow pc sales. Rumors abound that pc sales are poor, and yet INTC and MSFT are projecting great q's. You do agree that INTC and MSFT have products that sell when pc's sell, right? I want to focus on how we can make all these realities come together, or filter out what may be bs.

I am also guessing that cap spending will not be good this year. I think the equips are an awful place to make an investment Monday. But I think people will continue to be surprised by pc sales.
