November 16, 1998, Issue: 817 Section: News -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Curtain rises on memory designs Amber Howle Las Vegas -- Next-generation memory designs are expected to debut on the Comdex show floor here this week. Resellers attending the show will get an eyeful of Direct Rambus and double data rate (DDR) technologies. Direct RDRAM, developed by Rambus Inc., Mountain View, Calif., in close conjunction with Intel Corp., Santa Clara, Calif., is likely to make the biggest splash at the show. Major vendors such as Apacer Memory America, San Jose, Calif.; Kingston Technology Co., Fountain Valley, Calif.; and Viking Components, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., will be demonstrating designs conforming to the Direct Rambus architecture. Kingston actually will partner in a booth with Rambus. Direct Rambus supporters claim that Direct RDRAM will be available to the channel by the end of next year. Meanwhile, sample DDR SDRAMs are shipping now to OEMs from vendors such as Samsung Semiconductor Inc., San Jose, Calif., and Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., and should make it to the channel by next year, vendors said. These companies also are supporting Direct Rambus memory systems. Other vendors, such as Simple Technology Inc., Santa Ana, Calif., have upped the capacity of current-generation memory modules. Simple will have its 1-Gbyte SDRAM Registered DIMM on display. Micron Technology Inc., Boise, Idaho, a supporter of both Direct RDRAM and an alternative technology, SLDRAM, will not be at the show, although some if its subsidiaries will be there.
