Mike, if I could add a little piece to the puzzle. In preparation for Y2K, a major bank I am familiar with currently has a complete duplicate of their central processing hardware set up, running simultaneously. They need only switch over to the compliant system at the appropriate time. Do you think this will have any impact on their hardware budget over the next 12-18 months?

Mike

> Or, buy software that converts the old to the new. If that software is available, or if you are hiring programmers to rewrite code, you don't really need the new boxes.

Is it also true that since you have to rewrite the software, why not rewrite it for a new platform rather than for the one that should go to the dumpster a long time ago? Besides, there are Y2K problem in some existing hardware so they have to be replaced anyway.

I think 1999 is the year IT will get MORE money to spend instead of less. They have the justification and every CEO will write down the cost as a once-in-a-millenium charge.

Tim
JMHO of course.

Mike I am pretty sure that the demand for hardware will be strong for the next 12 months, but there will be a yo-yo reversal after 2000. Who will replace computers AFTER 2000? If a computer needs to be replaced, it will be replaced before 2000, not after.
