One suggestion of a synonym for "true" liberalism today that I ran across is "neo-progressivism." I like the way it echoes with turn-of-the-century American progressivism. But unfortunately, the Communists, in their day, were always talking about the "progressive forces of society," so that kind of spoils it for me. :-(( We need different terms, for different breeds of liberals & conservatives. Where self-described conservatives are concerned, Some are, quite simply, "reactionaries." Not meant invidiously. Simply indicates those that do not want to "conserve" or "preserve" anything in the present, but want to go back to a "golden age" in the past. Others are foward-looking types, "progressive conservatives": I might even put Newt Gingrich, with his thing for technology, in this category. And so forth, and so on. Have you noticed how "conservative", even "reactionary", die-hard environmentalists often are, even though they are often viewed as "radical liberals"? The most extreme of them want to go back to the pre-industrial era altogether. And this whole natural foods-alternative medicine movement also seems to me, to reveal a (reactionary) longing for an earlier, simpler time. I can recall, for years, buying only Post's Raisin Bran for my kids, rather than Kellogg's, because Post's did not contain any BHT (that wicked preservative), whereas Kellogg's did. Well, it turns out that BHT is GOOD for you. It keeps cancer-causing mold out of your cereal and your bread. And remember the bone meal that the health stores used to peddle? Well, they discovered it was full of lead...People actually died from eating that Healthful Stuff. And so on. jbe
