Jim -
you do seem to have been using a lot of carborundum lately
well with guys like you on the thread I need something with some abrasive power, don't you think?

I have better informal ties to current and former CPQ people than Dell people, and I have a long history with some of the early CPQ players (almost none of whom are still with the company). I probably have a better feel for CPQ culture as well. But I think I have a good feel for Dell's high level strategy and business direction and I have built up a pretty good list of former CPQ execs who are now at Dell.

Don't take anything I am saying as casting doubt on the talent of Dell's management. They are way more focused than CPQ management and their execution is superb. The problem is that short term, superb may not get it.

BTW I also have no doubts that Dell is a safe long term investment. I just have some concerns about short term growth - after all I was just given a pretty compelling lesson on that topic with CPQ in '98.
