Hawkins did fine. His lecture was on his vision of the future of man.
He does not think it will be as depicted in Startrek. He thinks man will continue to evolve in complexity. He also thinks that computers and their software will gradually approach man in complexity and perhaps attain thinking. Genetic engineering may spur man's further evolution not immediately but over the next thousand years. Shades of Zardoz!

His physical condition was poor. He also needs a new speech synthesizer.But he does not seem too have one soupson of self pity.
