I always thought that air turbulence from the bird ahead takes the form of a small updraft. Flying in this updraft would be easier because energy not used for lift would be used to propel forward. I never thought about the lead birds breaking wind. This would explain why birds don't fly beak to tail. Guess we're never too old to learn. PW.
