There are many compression algorithms available, my guess is that they are using some sort of Quantization table. For example, when a signal is input into a system, it is extremely inefficient to transmit the signal as is. In order to reduce the bandwidth, one would put a codebook on the sending side and on the receiving side of the system.

Next, the system would break down the signal into small parts and determine an indicie which best fits. Then the indicie is transmitted instead of the signal.
