Dear Jozef (OT warning - about the goddam bananas)

This is a sad day indeed. When I was debating with that other guy, whose name I have now mercifully forgotten, I thought that he was the only one who was not equipped to understand the idea of development aid.

The point is not about "elite" or "consumersim". It is about "doing the right thing".

In Europe's case it is helping the poor in developing countries (which the other moron, by the way, called selfish and ethnocentric). I'm not part of the elite but I'm supporting the aid fully. Little more expensive bananas, who cares.

In the case of the US we could expect much less. "Doing the right thing" would constitute just avoiding to make a complete jackass of themselves (did not work with this banana war either).

Having extremely limited exposure to foreign media you wouldn't know what I'm talking about.

I'll tell an example. Remember the Russians blowing the Korean civilian airline jet off the sky when it had got lost and flew into Russia? Lots of bodies. Big cock-up, wouldn't you think? Like a complete failure in PR? Big scandal everywhere (except in Russia where it was played down). Total loss of face.

Remember the Americans blowing the Iranian civilian airline jet off the sky in the Gulf? Lots of bodies. Big cock-up. OK so everybody makes mistakes (although this time the jet was in time and on course). But when the compensation case went to court in NY, the court ruled out any compensation for the dead. Hundreds of goddam orphans, not a dime. They were pictured in the papers. Is this like a COMPLETE failure in PR? Big scandal everywhere (except in the States where it was played down). Total loss of face.

I once talked with an American who wondered why its always them guys who get shot first if there is a revolution or hijacking or something. I said I have no clue.
