Mr. Su,

As for Gore's comments, I just wonder what would have happened if APEC was held in the US and Mahatir is the keynote speaker.

I don't know what to make of Mr. Gore's comments either. The very first lesson branded into my brain by my (Malay) Malaysian wife was the injunction never to embarrass her in any way! I have become personally familiar with the unique Malay emotion that gave rise to the word "amok"!

Those rude remarks of the Vice President couldn't have been a mere mistake and it seems likely to me that a "good cop bad cop" scenario is playing out with the President on his way to Southeast Asia via Tokyo.

Let's see if Mr. Clinton can sweet talk Ms. Rafidah Aziz.

P.S. My wife, whom no one in Malaysia would mistake for a Texan, also on a recent trip home was called "boss" whenever she spent a lot of money. So it must have been either encouragement or acknowledgement of the magnitude of your monetary disbursements. <G>

G'day all again - dear Ramsey, you sez, "As for Gore's comments, I just wonder what would have happened if APEC was held in the US and Mahatir is the keynote speaker. Instead of address economic issues, he makes some off the wall remarks supporting the Republicans and Ken Starr, hinting that Clinton should step down."

1st, I must congratulate you. The ability to be in other people's shoes is very commendable. If every being behaves that way, the world will be much better place. However, I do not think the parallel is close enough. 1st, while I do not know enough of Malaysia, but despite the backbiting nature of the beltway, Mr Starr didn't get arrested with charges like that of Mr Anwar's. And what's so wrong for the veep to pay homage to the courageous people in Malaysia? Lip service or not, this administration did the same thing in China and elsewhere. At least, the good folks at Stratfor cannot accuse the admin of not having a policy [even if it is a paper thin one <sg>.]

Anyway, I for one would not bent out of shape if the Mad Hatter were to make such a speech - afterall, Mr Perot has already beat him to it.

best, Bosco
