As new and infantile as Java is, it has become entrenched into all of our futures people. It may not be running many mission-critical Line-of-Business applications, but make no mistake about it, Java has a strong future in the industry. There are simple too many IT players (many of the largest i the industry) backing its future. I cant disagree with you more regarding Java. Unless some application software companies embrace this technology it will die in the enterprise. Sap, I2, etc have no significant java plans.
