Tom,
Research/Think Tank vs. R&D company? To me, while I agree that there might be slight differences, they are still a service company and don't have the pressures of a market launch. Since they have a "recurring" revenue stream with their primary client, who's rushing??? I don't see the fire being lit under their butts.

PARC has a number of great technologies that never made it commerically or have struggled commerically. There are viable products on the market that have come out of PARC, but some say early forms of the GUR were developed at PARC but commercialized elsewhere. Anyway, maybe my example was not good, but the concept of no looming deadlines, no chance of losing your client, no lack of cash concerns me. These are usually the reason why most service/R&D/custom development shops stay up at night to service their customers.

As for the hype of OO, there is a difference between Objects and Components. The messaging and data exchange is what components do that Objects don't do. You and I are in total agreement, it is a symantec difference. Components are self functioning/encapsulated applications that have unique identifications and expose themselve and their functions to other components. They essentially publish the fact that they handle invoice processing and all invoice processign requests are passed to that component. It is a classic supplier/consumer relationship. I agree that this is what MBA is going to be developing and will be doing so without PSFT logos on their Non-Disclosures, Non-Competes and other legal documents.
